Sobs sobs today last day of the Volkswagen Women competition. Because i always very excited mah :D Found some info on the web again :D (only those that i want it to be posted here)
One fact is certain and one fact is more than the possible; that is the scenario for the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup.The tournament commences in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday 6th September and concludes with the final, three days later, on Monday 8th September 2008.A certain fact is that a new champion will be crowned; the more than possible fact is that the champion will be from the People’s Republic of China, the country which currently dominates the global table tennis scene.
Neither, Zhang Yining nor Wang Nan are competing; the latter retired from international table tennis when matters came to a conclusion at the Beijing Olympic Games, whilst one week ago, Zhang Yining withdrew from the annual event.Eight Titles SharedBoth Zhang Yining and Wang Nan have won the Women’s World Cup title on four occasions, whilst the other three winners have all been Chinese compatriots of the two celebrated stars.Deng Yaping won the first ever Women’s World Cup crown when she succeeded in Hong Kong in 1996, whilst in 2000 the successful player was Li Ju and more recently in 2006, Guo Yan secured gold.Li Ju and Deng Yaping have long since retired from international play whilst the name Guo Yan was not on the list of invitees.Top SeedsTop seed in 2008 in the Malaysian capital city is China’s Guo Yue, the reigning world champion with colleague Li Xiaoxia, the player she beat in the Women’s Singles final at the Liebherr World Championships in 2007, seeded two.Singapore’s Li Jia Wei, who gained fourth places in the Women’s Singles event at the Beijing Olympic Games, is seeded three with compatriot, Wang Yue Gu, the winner at the Brazilian Open earlier in the year, seeded four.Strong OppositionIn the group stage Guo Yue faces strong opposition from Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun and the Dominican Republic’s Wu Xue; the former a player with arguably the most powerful backhand in female table tennis, the latter a Women’s Singles quarter-finalists at the Beijing Olympics. Yang Fen of Congo Brazzaville, the African champion, completes the group.Singaporean ThreatStrong opposition for Guo Yue and also for Li Xiaoxia; she confronts Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, a player who impressed at the Olympics and has made a meteoric rise to table tennis stardom in the past twelve months. Also, in the group appear two continental champions who have experience and may well ask questions; the players being Li Jiao from the Netherlands, the European champion and Miao Miao from Australia, the Oceania champion. No Lapses of ConcentrationMeanwhile, for both Li Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu they can afford no lapses of concentration.Li Jia Wei faces Hong Kong’s talented Tie Yana plus the experienced Gao Jun of the United States and one of Europe’s rising hopes, Hungary’s Georgina Pota.Similarly there are testing opponents for Wang Yue Gu. She confronts the defensive skills of Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah, the replacement for Zhang Yining plus Romania’s determined Daniela Dodean and the representative from Malaysia, Beh Lee Wei.FormatInitially play is in groups of four players with the first and second placed players progressing to the quarter-finals.

It was more of the same for Gao Jun of the United States and Li Jia Wei of Singapore, in the second series of matches at the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup, in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur, on the evening of Saturday 7th September 2008 Gao Jun had caused the major shock of the morning’s play by beating Li Jia Wei in four straight games; Gao Jun currently stands at No.17 on the ITTF Women’s World Rankings whilst Li Jia Wei is at No.6.In the evening session of play, Gao Jun continued her winning ways whilst for Li Jia Wei it was more sadness.
ExperienceThe experience of Gao Jun prevailed in five games against Hungary’s Georgina Pota, whilst by the same margin, Li Jia Wei suffered once again in opposition to a lower world ranked player. She was beaten by Hong Kong’s Tie Yana, currently standing at No.10 on the global female list.Top Seed TestedTwo defeats for the third seed and almost a reverse for the No.1 seed; China’s Guo Yue was extended the full seven games distance by Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun in Group A, the power of the latter causing the speed of the former problems.Success for Guo Yue and the Dominican Republic’s Wu Xue kept her hopes of a quarter-final place alive; having lost in her opening match to Guo Yue, she beat Congo Brazzaville’s Yang Fen in six games.Li Xiaoxia Wins in StyleProblems for Guo Yue but there were no such difficulties for her compatriot, Li Xiaoxia. In Group B she defeated Feng Tianwei of Singapore in five games, whilst in the counterpart contest, Li Jiao of the Netherlands, who in her opening match had lost to Li Xiaoxia, overcame Australia’s Miao Miao. Wang Yue Gu Keeps Singapore Flag Flying.
Defeats for the Singaporeans Li Jia Wei and Feng Tianwei but no such reverses in Group D for their compatriot Wang Yue Gu; having beaten Romania’s Daniela Dodean in her opening duel she ended the day successfully with victory over Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah.However, it was a very keeping her nerve against the Korean’s superb defensive skills.Daniela Dodeclose encounter; the duel went the full seven games distance with Wang Yue Gu eventually an Keeps Hopes AliveMeanwhile, in the one remaining match it was success for Daniela Dodean, she defeated the host nation’s Beh Lee Wei in four straight games to keep her quarter-final hopes alive.

China’s Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia plus Hong Kong’s Tie Yana and Singapore’s Wang Yue Gu, completed their first stage matches unbeaten at the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday 7th September 2008.In so doing they secured a safe passage to the quarter-finals.Meanwhile, with only one defeat to their names, Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun, Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah and Gao Jun of the United States also booked their places in the last eight.
In the quarter-finals Guo Yue meets Feng Tianwei, Tie Yana confronts Kim Kyung Ah, Wang Yue Gu opposes Gao Jun and for Li Xiaoxia, the adversary is Jiang Huajun.Guo Yue and Jiang Huajun Finish in StyleTop seed, Guo Yue, completed her series of matches with victory over Congo Brazzaville’s Yang Fen, whilst also in Group A, Jiang Huajun who had lost to Guo Yue on the opening day in a close seven games encounter, defeated Wu Xue of the Dominican Republic.Wu Xue finished the group in third place with Yang Fen, fourth.Li Xiaoxia and Feng Tianwei QualifySuccess for Guo Yue and also for compatriot, Li Xiaoxia; she defeated Australia’s Miao Miao to complete her first stage programme unscathed, whilst in the counterpart Group B match, Feng Tianwei defeated Li Jiao of the Netherlands. On the opening day, Li Xiaoxia had inflicted the one and only defeat on Feng Tianwei whilst Li Jiao had beaten Miao Miao to secure third place.a Need to AdjustIn both Group A and Group B matters had progressed according to seeding but that had not been the case in Group C where on the opening day, Li Jia Wei of Singapore had suffered nightmares losing to both Gao Jun and Tie Yana.“After the Olympics, I haven’t been undergoing any systematic training because the period between the Olympics and the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup is so short”, explained Li Jia Wei. “Another element is the inorganic glue which made my racket too hard to use; during the Olympics, we were still using the organic glue, so I'm not quite accustomed to this sudden change.”Pimpled RubberIt is something to which Li Jia Wei will need to adapt. “I know every player may run into such a problem”, she continued. “However, as a player who uses pimples, the degree of difficulty for me is a little higher.”Li Jia Wei uses short pimples on the forehand and reversed rubber on the backhand.A disappointing first day for Li Jia Wei but there was a grain of consolation on the second day. She concluded her programme of matches with victory over Hungary’s Georgina Pota to secure third place; top spot went to Tie Yana who recorded a straight games win over Gao Jun.Success for SingaporeDefeat for Georgina Pota one of Europe’s bright hopes and defeat for a player in a similar situation. Romania’s Daniela Dodean lost to Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah, who one day earlier had suffered at the hands of Wang Yue Gu.The Singaporean completed her series of matches by beating the host nation’s Beh Lee Wei to with Kim Kyung Ah in second spot ahead of Daniela Dodean and Beh Lee Wei.

Singapore’s Feng Tianwei caused the major shock on the second day of play, Sunday 7th September 2008, at the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, when she beat China’s Guo Yue in five games at the quarter-final stage.Meanwhile, in the remaining three quarter-final matches, matters went very much as per ranking. Hong Kong’s Tie Yana defeated Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah; Singapore’s Wang Yue Gu overcame Gao Jun of the United States and China’s Li Xiaoxia defeated Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun.
Mistakes"I made too many mistakes today; thee main reason I think is that I’m at the low point on the curve after Olympics and I haven't trained since", said Guo Yue. "You know, there was a series of activities in China for celebration; besides, today is just the second day to use to new glue and I haven’t been totally become accustomed to it, I could not play at my usual level."Good Time to Play ChinaIt would seem that the best time to play the Chinese is just after a major tournament. At the Salwa Cup Kuwait Open in February 2008 there were defeats for Ma Lin against Korea's Joo Se Hyuk and for Wang Hao, Ma Long and Chen Qi in opposition to Vladimir Samson. The tournament followed the Evergrande Real Estate World Team Championships.GlueMeanwhile Feng Tianwei concurred with Guo Yue with regards to the glue situation."The racket is slower and I cannot gain so much spin or power as usual", said Feng Tianwei. "Of course the new glue is a big problem for both of us, so it was fair; today I was just more patient than Guo Yue,I had the feeling that she was a little anxious when she fell behind."Third MeetingIt was the third time the space of one year that Feng Tianwei and Guo Yue had met in a world ranking event; it was the first time that the Singaporean had won.The first meeting was in September 2007 at the Panasonic China Open when Guo Yue had won in seven games in round two; the closeness of the match was a portent of matters that were to follow.Asian CupIn March 2008, they met on two occasions, both at the Asian Cup.Guo Yue succeeded in five games in the group stage, matches at that stage of proceedings being best of five games before winning quite convincingly in the final.Notable WinThe reigning World Champion recorded a straight games victory but en route Feng Tianwei had achieved what few other have achieved in the current century. At the quarter-final stage, she defeated China’s Zhang Yining, the world number one ranked player and now twice Olympic Women’s Singles champion.Ninth MeetingMeanwhile for Tie Yana and Kim Kyung Ah it was their ninth meeting in world ranking events with the balance now being very much with the Hong Kong player. She has now won six of the duels; as for Wang Yue Gu against Gao Jun and Li Xiaoxia in opposition to Jiang Huajun; the records are similar.Three Wins ApieceThe statistics in world ranking events read: four meetings with Wang Yue Gu and Li Xiaoxia having recorded three wins to one defeat. In the semi-finals, Feng Tianwei meets Tie Yana whilst Li Xiaoxia confronts Wang Yue Gu.
